8 million tonnes. That is how much plastic waste scientist estimates finds its way into the oceans every year. Unfortunately the plastic doesn’t decompose over time, instead the wind and ocean currents gather the waste in big areas. If we could assemble these plastic gyres, they would cover an area as big as Africa. Much of the waste is ingested by the marine life, and scientist have even found plastic particles up to 11 kilometres beneath the ocean surface. The pollution affects both the marine life as well as the communities depending on an income from fishing. Our plastic pollution is so extensive, that in 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans, if we measure it by weight.
Local communities collect the plastic from coastal gatherings or in fishing nets.
We process the plastic.
We transport the plastic from Asia to Northern Europe.
tonnes of plastic is emitted to the oceans every year. That equals to a garbage truck full of plastic unloading into the ocean every minute.
of all newly produced plastic is reused. The remaining plastic which is not being reused is estimated to have a value up to 120 billion dollars a year.
is the year where the amount of plastic in the ocean exceeds the amount of fish, if we measure it by weight.
million tonnes of plastic is currently estimated to pollute the oceans. Within the last 50 years, our use of plastic has doubled by 21 times.
